 Bad news...

The Geek Squad FINALLY called me back yesterday and the prognosis wasn't good. My laptop is officially dead.

The Geek Squad has been really good at talking circles around me. First, they told me that my memory was bad and that I was going to have to replace it ($64 to buy a new 1GB memory thingy, $39 dollars for them to install it). My mom was in town for a DECA school trip, so I told her about what they said, and she said that sounded fishy to her, since she had an idea what they problem was. We stopped by on our way to the mall and this time they told us that, oh no, the memory was fine now, it's the hardrive that's bad. A hardrive that I bought from Best Buy 2 years ago and they installed. And, unfortunately, my warrenty was up. So, they said they could attempt to back up my files onto DVDs (I backed most of my stuff up recently, but there was $75 worth of music that I hadn't put on the external yet, plus some files that I wanted, like my most recent version of the Booty Call story I'm working on), and then replace my hardrive and put all my files back on for me. The whopping total: over $400.

Mom and I had a discussion, and we just decided it wasn't worth it, since the computer is about 4 years old. We're pulling the plug on my dear, sweet, beloved laptop.

Let us all observe a moment of silence for Qwerty the laptop...

Anywho, on the bright side, we shopped around online for a new laptop (I would be fine that the one I have right now, but it's my school laptop and doesn't have a big enough hardrive for all my music.), and bought one. It should be ready in a a couple weeks. Even better news, it has 3GB memory and 250GB hardrive. Oh the space I could fill with that! I'm so excited.

More good news: Mom was true to her word and returned American Dreams to me. I can finish the season now!
OOO, the S3 finale of The Office is on right now. This is a good night!

(and I in no way mean to belittle the death of my laptop with my apparent happiness. I'm still sad about it, believe me. Down with the Geek Squad!)

*moment of silence*

I hate the death of a laptop - it is really sad. And are you getting back the music you lost at all, or are you not having them do the backup thing?

Yeah, they are still supposed to back up all my files. Last night, the told me it would take 20 dvds to back it all up or I could buy an external and have them put it on there. I had a 750GB external at home, so I told them I would bring it by today. Hopefully, (*crosses fingers*) they will do everything they are supposed to, because my mom is leaving today an she is much better at yelling at people than I am :)

Poor laptop! They are going to attempt to back up your files? Does that mean they aren't going to charge you if the attempt is unsuccessful?

I hope you are able to get your stuff back.

Are you going to back up the stuff on your external before you give it to them? You know, just in case they do something stupid.

Sigh, probably not, but wouldn't that be nice.

You got me very paranoid now, so I'm putting my music and story on my other laptop, just in case. I don't want to lose anything!

I think in the case of the Geek Squad it never hurts to be paranoid. I hate them, but when I do have to go to them I make sure I have copies of everything before I give them my computer.
